[View in browser]( [Mother Jones Daily Newsletter]( December 24, 2021 Merry Christmas Eve to all who celebrate! I hope that you and your families have stayed safe from the Omicron surge and that you're enjoying all the classic winter holiday comforts: sugar cookies, hot cocoa, holly, tinsel, the smell of fresh pine, etc. Christmas Eve, for my family, typically involves a heated discussion over which movie we should watch to top off the night. My favorite Christmas movie is probably Ingmar Bergman's Fanny and Alexander, which is one of the most magical films I've seen, but I've never managed to convince them to watch it with me. Technically, I guess, Fanny and Alexander isn't a holiday movie, but the first quarter or so is centered on a long Christmas celebration, and the lush Swedish holiday decor on display never fails to put me in the spirit. (It is Bergman though, so part of it gets pretty dark.) My dad is a big fan of the 1984 version of A Christmas Carol, starring George C. Scott, but my younger brother and sister are more partial to the computer-animated Robert Zemeckis version. And my mom is a huge fan of It's a Wonderful Life and Home Alone. In the end, we usually just go with A Charlie Brown Christmas, which is so familiar at this point that I'm pretty sure I know it entirely by heart. What really makes the movie is Vince Guaraldi's swinging soundtrack, which just piles on hit after hit, and is one of the best Christmas albums of all time. (This is one subject where I won't tolerate any disagreement.) I'd also like to express my gratitude to all you loyal readers for supporting me and my colleagues in the work we do. It's a privilege to be writing for an audience like you. Happy holidays! – Noah Y.
