November 10, 2021 Courthouse drama doesn't get much more interesting than the trial of Kyle Rittenho

[View in browser]( [Mother Jones Daily Newsletter]( November 10, 2021 Courthouse drama doesn't get much more interesting than the trial of Kyle Rittenhouse, who took the stand in his homicide case today. We know that he fatally shot two people in Kenosha, Wisconsin, last year. The question is whether he acted in self-defense—and whether the jury will be able to issue a verdict at all. Rittenhouse [broke down in tears]( as he attempted to describe the moments leading up to the first shooting. But the most stunning moment in the trial occurred with the jury and the defendant out of the courtroom. Prosecutor Thomas Binger inflamed Judge Bruce Schroeder when Binger questioned Rittenhouse on his silence after the shootings—the right to remain silent is well established in the United States—and when he attempted to elicit evidence that the judge had previously prohibited. "Don't get brazen with me," [Schroeder said]( after Binger interrupted him. "You know very well that an attorney can’t go into these types of areas when the judge has already ruled without asking outside of the presence of the jury to do so. So don't give me that." Rittenhouse's lawyers [asked for a mistrial](, but it's unclear how the judge will respond to the request.
