On this day in 1939, an excavation of a medieval cemetery at Sutton Hoo, in England, unearthed the rusted remains of an elaborately decorated [Anglo-Saxon war helmet]( from the seventh century. And on this day in 1996, two people in Kennewick, Washington, stumbled upon a [skull]( that turned out to be the topper to the nearly complete, 9,000-year-old skeleton lying beneath the banks of the Columbia River. The ownership of the Kennewick man engendered controversy for years before he was laid to rest in 2017 by five Native tribes from the Columbia Plateau.
