The following sponsored message from Planned Parenthood Action Fund has been sent to you via Mother Jones. We're a nonprofit, and a majority of our budget comes from readers like you—but revenue from companies and organizations that advertise with Mother Jones helps us run a stable business, maintain independence, and produce more of the hard-hitting journalism you expect from our publication. Georgia governor signs near-total ban on abortion. Don't let this go unanswered. Georgia governor signs six-week abortion ban. [Speak Up: No Bans. Not Now. Not Ever. »]( [Add Your Name]( [Governor Kemp] [Add Your Name]( Friend — Brian Kemp, the governor of Georgia, just did the outrageous: He signed into law a ban on abortion after six weeks of pregnancy. Six. Weeks. Many people don't even know they're pregnant at six weeks. Kemp's law might as well be a total ban on abortion in the 8th largest state in the country. And it includes up to 10 years in prison for doctors who perform abortions after six weeks. And it's not just Kemp. Not to be outdone, Alabama politicians are expected to pass a bill later this week outlawing abortion, at any state of pregnancy. I don't know about you, but I'll be damned if Gov. Kemp gets to sign this dangerous, draconian bill and go about his business like nothing happened. Planned Parenthood will be suing the state of Georgia — but I want to make sure Kemp hears directly from us. We must make it clear: We refuse to let him and extremists like him strip away our rights, spread lies and misinformation about our health care, control our bodies and our futures, and criminalize us. [Tell Gov. Kemp and extremist lawmakers like him: Abortion IS health care. Abortion IS our right. And we'll fight Every. Single. Attempt. to take it away »]( [To politicians everywhere who are trying to take away our rights without a fight: We see through your extremist rhetoric and outright lies. Abortion IS health care — and it's health care that nearly one in four American women will seek in her lifetime. Banning abortion at six weeks means banning abortion before many people even know they're pregnant. But you already know that — it's the point of these dangerous and unconstitutional bans. Roe v. Wade affirmed the constitutional right to abortion more than four decades ago — and we won't stand by while you gut our right to control our own bodies. We will fight back against each and every attempt to block people from accessing health care. We will work to make sure anybody who needs an abortion can get one. And we won't stop until you get the message that politicians belong nowhere near the exam room. Thank you, Your Name Here]( [Add Your Name  »]( I know you might be thinking, "At least the courts will strike this down." Let me be very clear: Politicians are handpicking anti-women's health care judges for the courts. Once upon a time we could look at such an extreme law like this and trust that almost any judge would strike it down as blatantly unconstitutional. We can't rely on judges like that anymore. We're also dealing with a deadly game of "copy cat" when it comes to these dangerous abortion bills. Alabama is about to pass the most extreme ban on abortion since Roe was decided more than 45 years ago. In addition to Georgia, three other states have passed six-week bans this year. And six-week bans are filed or moving through TWELVE other state legislatures. The Trump-Pence administration is pumping out blatant LIES about abortion every day. It's not just about one state, or one governor: This is a national crisis. So, what do we do? It comes down to two things, really: Get rid of the politicians who push these bans. Then ensure all lawmakers hear our voices loud and clear. From this day forward, let no politician be more afraid of right-wing pundits and party leaders than they are afraid of us. [It starts with taking a stand against dangerous and unconstitutional attempts to strip away our rights and attack our health care. Amplify our message right now »]( I'd much rather send you emails asking you to support policies that will help open new health centers, expand Medicaid, guarantee birth control to everyone who needs it, and so on. But as long as extremists wield so much power, especially in state government, we have to continue fighting back and speaking out on attacks like this. We took back a lot of power last November, but not enough to fully turn the tide on reproductive health and rights. The work continues. We can win, but we've got to keep our sleeves rolled up.
