What would it take to transform America from a constitutional democracy into a cruel, ultra-conservative theocracy? The following advertisement from Americans United for the Separation of Church and State has been sent to you via Mother Jones' email list. [Americans United for the Separation of Church and State]( What would it take to transform America from a constitutional democracy into a cruel, ultra-conservative theocracy? Could it happen through a violent insurrection led by an extremist mob? A 6-3 ruling by the Supreme Court elevating religious beliefs above individual freedoms? Anti-majoritarian laws enabling a Christian Nationalist minority to make decisions for every American? It’s hard to contemplate our precious American dream gutted by any single event. During these perilous times, we need organizations that will fight for our democracy, our rights, and our freedoms. We need organizations like Americans United for Separation of Church and State. For more than 75 years, AU has defended Freedom Without Favor and Equality Without Exception—for every American, safeguarding the separation of church and state and the freedoms that flow from it. But a new manifesto called Project 2025—written by a “who’s who” of Christian Nationalist organizations and their shadowy network of dark-money funders forces all of us to confront the unthinkable. But none of us have to do this alone, you can join the fight at [au.org/mj](. Project 2025 is an alarmingly detailed playbook to restructure the entire federal government in service to the Christian Nationalist agenda. It would: - ban abortion and severely limit reproductive health care; - dismantle racial justice protections and erect new roadblocks to equality; - eliminate the Department of Education and divert public funds to private religious schools; - roll back the rights of LGBTQ+ people; - slash public services that are open to all, and redirect billions of much-needed federal social service funding to private Christian Nationalist adoption and other agencies that are free to discriminate at will; - erase marriage equality and restrict divorce options; - redefine religious freedom as an unrestricted license to discriminate. It’s Christian Nationalism distilled into a 900-page to-do list. And its authors hope to set it in motion as early as next year. We cannot allow that to happen. Stopping Project 2025 is priority one for organizations like Americans United, and we need to rally all Americans who want to fight back against this direct threat to our rights and freedoms. You can learn more about how to support American United’s efforts against Project 2025 by visiting [[au.org/mj](]. Now is the time for all of us to come together and defend our freedoms as Americans.
