The MoJo Daily newsletter, Monday through Friday. [View in browser]( [Support our nonprofit journalism]( [Mother Jones Daily Newsletter](     April 24, 2024 The Supreme Court heard oral arguments in its second major abortion case in less than two months—and I regret to inform you that [the outlook is incredibly grim](: The court's conservative majority appeared [united in their skepticism]( that the federal mandate to provide emergency care, a law known as EMTALA, requires abortion care. The consequences of such skepticism are already known. [As my colleague Pema Levy wrote](, pregnant people are regularly turned away from emergency rooms; they suffer [hemorrhaging]( until near death; people have [spent]( three days in the ICU with sepsis. Yet, the conservative justices seemed to openly deny that such events have happened. This eagerness to suspend reality is striking, especially when human suffering—forcing pregnant people to be at death's door to receive care—is completely avoidable. And if you think that this is just a problem for red states, you're wrong. Nina Martin warns us that blue states, which have a high proportion of Catholic hospitals in their health care infrastructure, could see the further weaponization of arguments used to deny emergency care. All this, of course, is yet another [reminder of the dire effects]( of overturning Roe. But it's ultimately a choice to be this cruel, and the conservative justices of the Supreme Court are chomping at the bit to force such brutality on the rest of us. —Inae Oh Advertisement [House BookShop Ad]( [Top Story] [Top Story]( [Idaho Wants the Supreme Court to Ignore Reality.
