[Support our nonprofit journalism]( [Mother Jones Daily Newsletter]( April 10, 2024 Hey Mother Jones readers. I'm [Katie Herchenroeder](, an editorial fellow here who covers [abortion politics]( and the right's [growing assault on no-fault divorce](, among other topics. Today and yesterday, Iâve been reporting on news out of my home state, Arizona, after the state's Supreme Court [upheld](a near-total abortion ban from 1864. At that time, the territoryânot yet a stateâwas made up of less than 10,000 people. Shortly after the ruling, Arizona Senate candidate Kari Lake [claimed in a statement]( that she opposes the law. But in 2022, Lake called it a "great law" while (unsuccessfully) campaigning for the governor. And despite repeatedly [taking credit]( for overturning Roe, Donald Trump also tried to distance himself from the Arizona decision, saying it went too far and that "itâs all about stateâs rights and it will be straightened out." This is the same man who, on Monday, said that he supported leaving abortion rights to individual states. Over the past few years, Iâve covered abortion access and reproductive justice in states like Texas, Tennessee, and Arizonaâbut these last 48 hours have felt unique. I lived in Tucson, Arizona, from the time I was nine until I graduated high school. I still have family and loved ones in the state and go back as often as I can. While filing drafts for my stories, I was also texting with friends about what this would mean for them and those they loveâa reminder that the work my colleagues and I do often hits very close to home. If you're reading this from Arizona, I'll note here what I told my friends: Abortion remains available in Arizona up to 15 weeks of pregnancy, and reportedly will for at least two months. The [Abortion Fund of Arizona]( and [clinics](, including Planned Parenthood, which operates most locations in the state, said they will [continue]( to provide care throughout that period. âKatie Herchenroeder Advertisement [Bluecoated Terror]( [Top Story] [Top Story]( [Kari Lake Claims She Opposes Arizona’s Near-Total Abortion BanâThe Same One She Cheered Two Years Ago]( Trump similarly tried to distance himself from the 1864 law.
