[Support our nonprofit journalism]( [Mother Jones Daily Newsletter]( April 4, 2024 Florida Democrats have long struggled with voter turnoutâa problem that likely explains the Biden campaign's little investment in the state this cycle. But after the state's dual abortion rulings this weekâone that paves the way for a six-week abortion ban and another that will give voters a chance to enshrine abortion rightsâcould a turning point be on the horizon? My colleague Abby Vesoulis has a great look at the [sudden Democratic momentum building]( in the Sunshine State, which even the Biden campaign believes could now be in play this November. But it's not just the president. Experts say that the abortion rulings [could lift all Democratic candidates]( in the state, including the Democratic challenger to Sen. Rick Scott. Here's what she told Abby: "We're going to make sure that Floridians remember that Rick Scott has been attacking womenâs rights for years," Debbie Mucarsel-Powell says. "One of the key issues here that Floridians will realize very soon and by the time November comes, is that it will mean nothing if they vote to pass this ballot amendment and enshrine in the stateâs constitution a womanâs right to her reproductive health care if then they elect Rick Scott, send him back to the Senate, and then he pushes for a national abortion ban." Democrats have good reason to be hopeful. Since Dobbs, every [ballot measure seeking to protect reproductive rights]( has been successful; each has fueled larger voter turnout, something Florida Democrats have long struggled with. After this week's rulings, perhaps that problem will have finally been cracked. âInae Oh Advertisement [The Marvelous Ones]( [Top Story] [Top Story]( [How Floridaâs Ballot Measure on Abortion Could Give Democrats a Lifeline]( The reproductive rights referendum could fuel turnout and make key races more competitive.
