Plus: Why Vanguard is optimistic about the outlook, undervalued biotech stocks and when Morningstar thinks the Fed will cut rates. On the one hand, that’s understandable. Worries about a recession, dramatic headlines about [the debt ceiling impasse]( and lingering bruises from 2022 appear to have wrung the euphoria out of investors. But there’s actually some good news out there for your portfolio. Admittedly, it’s not necessarily from the stock side of the house. Instead, as [we’ve been writing about,]( higher bond yields have become an investor’s new best friend–for now at least. In this week’s [Markets Brief]( we dig into how bonds are central to the potential good news in Vanguard’s long-term investment return forecasts. In the background, the debate is still raging about the economic outlook, especially with inflation still running hot and another strong jobs report likely in the coming week. This week, Morningstar’s senior U.S. economist Preston Caldwell came out with his latest predictions on whether the [United States will slide into recession]( and when the [Fed will start cutting interest rates](. Another aspect of the new investing landscape that [we have been exploring]( is the emphasis on companies with strong cash flows. This may seem wonky, but the concept is simple: In a tougher economic environment, it’s good to own stocks that generate tons of cash. This week Sandy Ward [screens for seven stocks]( that have solid balance sheets and whose businesses haul in cash, including Broadcom and Bristol-Meyers Squibb. We’ve got two other great stock screens this week. The first is our quarterly look at [stocks that knocked it out of the park]( during earnings season but are still cheap according to Morningstar analysts. And in our Friday stock screen, we revisit [biotech stocks]( and come up with seven undervalued names. Lastly, as earnings season winds down, we’re checking in on how some big names are looking, including whether [Disney]( [Ford]( and [Uber]( are buys after their earnings reports. As always, you can find all our markets coverage [here]( along with our new live U.S. stock market report that offers up an easy way to keep up to date on what’s happening during the trading day.
