As we noted in last week’s newsletter, this was likely to be a big week for news in the markets, the last big week of the year. And it didn’t disappoint. Well, on one level it did. The stock market seemed surprised after Fed Chair Jerome Powell talked tough on inflation Wednesday afternoon, leading to three straight down-days in the market. As [Morningstar’s Preston Caldwell explains]( the Fed wants to make sure investors know that it means business with its anti-inflation message, even if the market is currently thinking it will have room to lower rates by the end of next year. That hawkish talk from Powell came just a day after a second-consecutive softer-than-expected Consumer Price Index report. That report gave the Fed more flexibility on rates, but as [Lauren Solberg reports]( there’s still inflation pressure bubbling under the surface that needs watching. In fact, some in the markets are thinking that inflation pressures could remain high enough that even with a recession, the Fed may end up raising rates soon after cutting them, creating [a yo-yo effect with monetary policy and the markets](. We’ll get back to the investing angles in a moment, but since it’s year-end, it’s worth pausing to talk financial planning. [Christine Benz offers up]( an easy seven-step year-end portfolio review, and if you’re in retirement, she speaks to tax and IRA expert Ed Slott with [tips on taking last-minute RMDs](. Back to the markets: One of the biggest stories this year was the carnage in those big-name tech stocks that had been investor darlings coming into this year.
