I don’t want to add to the cacophony in an industry that’s notorious for it. If someone reads one of my articles or sits down for one of my presentations and acts on what they’ve learned, I want it to contribute to a decent outcome for them, even if I never see them again. That’s why I like these three-fund portfolios, composed of [core index funds]( in varying allocations for people at every stage of the investing lifecycle. Sure, you could “zhuzh” things up with a few extra holdings here and there; for example, I wouldn’t hate it if the in-retirement Bucket portfolios had a dash of short-term bonds and Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities or if the Saver portfolios had a bit of small-cap value exposure. But these minimalist portfolios have all of the core building blocks that you truly need. Last week I shared [three-fund IRA portfolios from Vanguard]( and this week I shone the spotlight on [three-fund Fidelity portfolios](. Note that all of these portfolios are geared toward tax-sheltered accounts, though I recently highlighted tax-efficient [Vanguard]( and [Fidelity]( versions that are similarly streamlined. Speaking of IRAs, investors in them confront a fork in the road: [Should they make pretax contributions or Roth]( I’d say that it depends, but tax- and retirement-planning expert Ed Slott is on Team Roth. He shares his rationale [in this video](. Investment-related frauds have been on the upswing, with cryptocurrency-related swindles leading the way. Amy Arnott and I had such an informative and [sobering conversation with Kathy Stokes]( director of fraud prevention at AARP. She shared some of the key types of investment and financial fraud that she and her team are seeing these days (it’s not just crypto), as well as how to protect yourself. Finally, I couldn’t be more proud of my forthcoming book, [How to Retire: 20 Lessons for a Happy, Successful, and Wealthy Retirement](zg_bs_g_2731_d_sccl_1/143-2932733-6203903?utm_source=eloqua&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=newsletter_improvingfinances&utm_content=57429&psc=1&elqTrackId=2684ccc85a1a4a00986afc19591d77fe&elq=d3f7f587cd86426bbd727b9263cd85e5&elqaid=57429&elqat=1&elqCampaignId=29271&elqak=8AF5CEE12173EAED49AD4503BB8271E5F239780FE8C7A114F28D54E3808C93569B16). I recently had a chance to discuss it with my friend and fellow Boglehead Rick Ferri for the [Bogleheads on Investing]( podcast. As you might expect from a former Marine Corps officer (him, not me), the interview went off with military precision; we spent two minutes on each chapter. I hope that you enjoy the conversation! With warm regards, Christine Benz P.S.: On September 17 (book launch day!) at 2 p.m. ET, I'll be doing a one-hour Retirement Researcher webinar, "5 Must-Knows About Retirement Spending," leveraging research that Amy Arnott, John Rekenthaler, Jeff Ptak and I have been working on.
