On Thursday, China said that foreign airlines banned from operating in the country due to COVID-19 would be permitted to resume limited flights. This action lifts a de facto ban on U.S airlines. Many may see Beijing’s decision to back off as a result of the escalating tensions between the two global superpowers. The relationship between Beijing and Washington has grown increasingly strained recently due to U.S accusations regarding COVID-19 and China’s role in Hong Kong. With China making this concession, do you think the U.S will reciprocate and loosen some restrictions too? Front Row Faces Florida Policeman Who Shoved Kneeling Woman Reviewed for Using Force [Florida Policeman Who Shoved Kneeling Woman Reviewed for Using Force] On Sunday, a Fort Lauderdale police officer was caught on video shoving a kneeling woman protestor. Now, according to police records, the 29-year-old officer Steven Pohorence has been reviewed a mind-blowing 79 times for using force on multiple occasions. What makes this situation so chilling is that Pohorence has been a Fort Lauderdale police officer for only three-and-a-half years. Some of these reviews include aiming his firearm at suspects, which he drew on 45 occasions while on duty. Strangely, he has never been disciplined for any of the reviewed actions and records show no violations of departmental regulations. During the incident, Pohorence was pulled away from the crowd by fellow officer Krystle Smith. According to Robert McKinzie, the Fort Lauderdale Commissioner, ‘What Krystal Smith did, to me, is an example of what men and women should do when they wear that badge, and they take that oath.’ McKinzie added, ‘Pohorence did not demonstrate that oath. I keep rewinding that tape … and no other officers reacted the way he reacted.’ Although Pohorence has been relieved of duty, don’t you think this should have happened a long time ago, considering his record? COVID-19 Crisis Could Lead to Collapse of the Fossil Fuel Sector [COVID-19 Crisis Could Lead to Collapse of the Fossil Fuel Sector] It seems that no industry is immune from the coronavirus pandemic, the fossil fuel sector included. According to Carbon Tracker, a financial think tank, the pandemic could cause a $25 trillion collapse. Also, the value of global reserves could decline by two-thirds earlier than expected since COVID-19 has accelerated the peak for gas, coal, and oil demand. This looming collapse could be a considerable threat to the world’s economic stability by ruining fossil fuel companies. The market value of these firms makes up a quarter of the global equity markets. In addition, they owe trillions of dollars to banks around the world. Wouldn’t their collapse send shockwaves through the global economy? LA Mayor to Cut Police Budget to Reinvest into Minorities [LA Mayor to Cut Police Budget to Reinvest into Minorities] The death of George Floyd at the hands of the Minneapolis police is causing waves in police departments in other states. On Wednesday, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti declared that the city’s police department budget would be reduced to up to $150 million. …because the money will be used to fund programs for communities of color. According to Garcetti, Los Angeles will initiate ‘meaningful changes in policing and race relations, including a review of funding that goes to the police.’ During a press briefing, Garcetti continued to say, ‘We will not be increasing our police budget. How can we at this moment?’ The $150 million is a drop in the ocean in the department’s massive $3.1 billion annual allowance, but it is a step in the right direction. Do you think police departments in other cities should follow this example? Tokyo Considering ‘Simplified’ Olympics [Tokyo Considering ‘Simplified’ Olympics] No other Olympics have ever been faced by so much uncertainty as the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. COVID-19 wreaked the best-laid plans by Japan to host the sporting event, and the country is looking for answers. Tokyo governor Yuriko Koike announced on Thursday that a ‘simplified’ Olympics might be held in 2021 and that possible adjustments were being discussed. The governor’s statement came after the Yomiuri newspaper explored various alternatives, including mandatory testing and fewer spectators at the games. According to the chief of the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) inspectorate for Tokyo, John Coates, the organizers have to plan on what could be a “very different” Olympics.
