How to stop cheating in a ChatGPT world... January 16, 2023 [View Online]( | [Sign Up]( | [Shop]( [Morning Brew]( TOGETHER WITH [Yogi Tea]( Good morning. Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Not only is it a federal holiday to honor the legacy of Dr. King, but it’s also the only federal holiday to be designated as a National Day of Service. So let this be a nudge to roll up your sleeves and get active in your local community—you can make a positive difference. —Neal Freyman MARKETS: YEAR-TO-DATE Nasdaq 11,079.16 +6.66% S&P 3,999.09 +4.57% Dow 34,302.61 +3.52% 10-Year 3.505% -37.5 bps Bitcoin $20,905.01 +26.43% Ethereum $1,555.09 +30.08% *Stock data as of market close, cryptocurrency data as of 1:00am ET. [Here's what these numbers mean.]( - Markets: The US stock and bond markets are closed for MLK Day, so we’ll have to wait another day to see if this year-opening rally will continue for a third week. But crypto trades 24/7, and the same hopeful inflation news that’s been lifting stocks has also given life to beaten-down cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin gained for the 11th straight day on Saturday, [topping $20,000]( for the first time in more than two months.  TECH [How to spot cheating in a ChatGPT world]( [A man looking at his hand to cheat on a test. It says ]( 5secondfilms via Giphy As more students realize that ChatGPT can write five-paragraph essays as good as—if not significantly better than—what they’re capable of, teachers are scrambling for tools that can detect whether they’re grading the writing of a young human or a young robot. Several cheating-detection tools have [sprung up]( in the few months since ChatGPT, a conversational language model from OpenAI, arrived on the scene. The most-talked about one is [GPTZero](, which was developed by, of all people…a student. Over winter break, 22-year-old Princeton student Edward Tian created an app that determines the likelihood that a piece of text was written by a human or by ChatGPT. While it probably didn’t make him the most popular dude on campus, the app has gotten more than 7 million views as of last week. Apps like GPTZero are becoming increasingly sought after as older cheating detection tools become obsolete in the ChatGPT era. Remember Turnitin? Many of us who’ve been tasked with explaining the green light at the end of The Great Gatsby have had to submit those essays to Turnitin.com to make sure we didn’t copy it from Wikipedia. That was effective…before ChatGPT. But what makes ChatGPT different is that it theoretically creates an original response of text every time you query it. That’s not what Turnitin is designed for: It cross-checks your work against an existing database of writing. Turnitin, of course, is on the case: It says it’s currently testing a tool that can detect AI-generated text, and plans to open it up to the public later this year. But as good as these apps get, ChatGPT and its fellow language models will also evolve—and some education experts say teachers will have to also rely on the oldest tool in the book to mitigate cheating: their noggin. Teachers will need to understand the differences (which do exist) between AI and human writing. They’ll also likely need to [overhaul their teaching process]( to minimize cheating opportunities—for instance, by setting clear expectations with students about the role of ChatGPT in classrooms, or by tweaking their assignments to reward skills ChatGPT hasn’t mastered… Yet.    TOGETHER WITH YOGI TEA [Warm up to well-being]( [Yogi Tea]( When you think of well-being, exercises like journaling, yoga, and deep breathing probably come to mind. WORLD Tour de headlines [Rescuers and onlookers gather at the site of a plane crash in Pokhara]Krishna Mani Baral/AFP via Getty Images Dozens killed in Nepal plane crash. At least 68 people were killed when a Yeti Airlines flight [crashed]( while attempting to land in the resort town of Pokhara on Sunday. A total of 72 people were on board the aircraft, a twin-engine ATR 72, including 15 foreign nationals. It’s Nepal’s worst plane disaster in 30 years, but plane crashes are not uncommon in this country of towering mountains, treacherous flying conditions, and weak (but improving) safety standards: Since 1946, Nepal has experienced 42 fatal airplane crashes. A Ukrainian residential building was destroyed. In the deadliest civilian attack on Ukraine in months, a Russian missile strike on a nine-story apartment block [killed 30 people]( in the city of Dnipro on Saturday. The Ukrainian military said the missile was a supersonic Kh-22 “aircraft carrier killer” that it does not currently have the ability to intercept. As Russia ramps up its attacks after a two-week breather, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged Western allies to supply more weapons. Britain recently announced it would send over 14 of its primary battle tanks. Biden classified docs update: The political chatter around classified documents ramped up over the weekend after the White House said it [found]( five more pages of classified documents at President Biden’s home in Wilmington, DE, on top of the previously disclosed two batches of classified docs. Republicans who’ve just assumed power in the House are asking for visitor logs of Biden’s home, while Democrats say they’re waiting on the findings of the recently appointed special counsel before drawing conclusions. HISTORY [Polarizing MLK monument opens in Boston]( [The Embrace- a new monument to MLK and his wife in Boston ]( Lane Turner/The Boston Globe via Getty Images On Friday, Boston city officials [unveiled]( the latest monument to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.—a $10 million bronze sculpture depicting the moment MLK embraced his wife, Coretta Scott King, after Dr. King learned he won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. It is called The Embrace. The completion of the 22-foot-tall statue was highly anticipated: Five years in the works, it is the largest monument to racial equity in the country, and it’s located in the Boston Common, the oldest public park in the US. Why Boston? That was where MLK met Coretta: He was a doctoral student at BU while she was studying at the New England Conservatory of Music. Boston Common was also the final destination of a 20,000-person-strong voting rights march Dr. King led from Roxbury in 1955. But The Embrace hasn’t exactly [been embraced]( from a critical POV. The design of the statue, which shows four arms intertwined, was bashed online for not depicting the couple in full and for generally giving off weird vibes. Corretta Scott King’s cousin, Seneca Scott, wrote in the online journal Compact, “Ten million dollars were wasted to create a masturbatory metal homage to my legendary family members.” The artist’s vision: Brooklyn-based sculptor Hank Willis Thomas [told the Boston Globe](, “This work is really about the capacity for each of us to be enveloped in love.”    CALENDAR The week ahead [Sundance Film Festival banner in Park City]George Frey/Getty Images Musk on trial over infamous tweet.
