The problem with the advice you've grown up with is that it's incredibly risky. ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ If you have any money in the stock market, you are a bigger gambler than I am. I've talked with so many people who consider themselves conservative investors. And you might think you are being conservative with your money too. But your actions and your portfolios are saying otherwise. “But Chris, I have my money diversified with low-fee index funds and bond funds…” Go take a look at the return on the Fidelity U.S. Bond Index Fund for the past few years. I'll give you a hint—the number isn't supposed to have a negative sign in front of it. Even if you look ten years out, it's still barely above one percent. That's way below the rate of inflation, so you are essentially lighting a portion of your money on fire each year. The problem with the advice you've grown up with, to save your money and put it in the market so someday you can retire, isn't working out. The market is all high risk. The sad fact is, even the most conservative of investors have put their money in the market where they feel comfortable. But if you are comfortable about doing what everyone else is doing, you are going to end up broke just like 90 percent of the country is. Next time, I want to share with you a staggering statistic about the state of the 401(k) in the US. But right now, I want to say I understand why you have followed the advice of every financial advisor you've ever met. When you are driving in a new city it's confusing. You don't have time to look over your shoulder for oncoming traffic before you make a rush decision to take this exit or the next one. Sometimes you just take a turn and pray you will be safe—that it will take you where you need to go. But after a while, you get used to this new city and you feel comfortable. Pretty soon you are driving with one knee on the steering wheel while eating a cheeseburger and checking your texts. Okay fine, hopefully you aren't doing that. But the point is, at first you need someone to help you navigate new environments. The same goes for investing. Let me help you navigate until you are comfortable driving on your own. I'm always happy to chat. Hit reply and we'll see how we can get around this new city together. The Flesch readability score uses the average length of your sentences (measured by the number of words) and the average number of syllables per word in an equation to calculate the reading ease. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables.
