Dan was the poster child for traditional retirement planning. He did everything right, but… ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ “Don’t spend too much time looking back and regretting what you may or may not have done in the past. Just take action now.” Dan is a newly retired army colonel who had followed the traditional path of investing in mutual funds in the late 80s and early 90s. After seeing poor results from those investments, he eventually moved into low-cost index funds which were performing better. He even managed to avoid major losses during the dot-com bubble bursting in the late 90s because he and his wife had converted their investments into cash to buy a house. He missed another financial zinger during the 2008 housing market collapse because houses in his area weren’t going upside down like most of the country. Dan was the poster child for traditional retirement planning. He did everything right. But he knew, now that it was time to retire, living off 3.5 percent of his savings wasn’t going to cut it—especially if he wanted to continue to live in California. After a friend of his shared with him one of my podcasts, he realized he needed to shift resources by redeploying into cash-flow-producing investments. When I met him he had a good amount of money tied up in his, as he calls it, “very overpriced Silicon Valley house.” By working with our program, he learned how to take advantage of that equity to invest in passive income investments. Now he has moved about forty percent of his net worth into several real estate syndications and other cash-flow-generating investments. He looks forward to a retirement that allows him to pursue other passions. For him, that is finding ways to contribute to his community while having the passive income to support himself and his family. His advice is to get connected with a community you trust and take action. If you are newly retired or nearing retirement, and you’ve realized your savings will not give you the quality of life your financial advisors promised you, just know: It isn’t too late. If you would like to join our community of investors with the same goal of creating passive cash flow, we would love to have you.
