I was living my life based on outdated financial strategies that don’t work anymore ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ I was teaching a retirement class at my church. Even though I was the instructor and was retired myself, everyone looked to another gentleman to see how he was doing so well in retirement. He was a retired financial advisor in his seventies. Everyone in the class looked to him to see how he had done it—like Yoda in the swamp guiding Luke to awaken the Force. When it came to the specifics, everything started to crumble. “How did you retire by investing in mutual funds? How are your investments doing now?” He said, “Honestly, I’m getting scared. Fortunately, I don’t need the money in the market. I have a military pension, a pension from my old job, and some commissions coming from my former insurance job. Actually, the money in the stock market hasn’t done that well.” Hmm... I sat to the side trying to be Switzerland as the confused expressions in the group slowly turned to concern. He had passive income, but it wasn’t anything any of us could replicate. Even worse, he was scared that he was going to run out of money. I could talk about the dream of financial freedom until my face turns blue, but it’s an abstract concept. What lights a fire in my heart is the thought that so many people come to this pit-in-the-stomach conclusion that their savings aren’t going to last. There is no greater fear than facing a financial cliff and seeing no way but down. I see a successful retirement as work optional—when you live life by a mission rather than chasing the next paycheck. I could geek out about the ins and outs of real estate investing for days. The tax savings implications, syndication vs. turnkey, net operating income, cash flow… But the gist of it is when you have stable, repeatable, passive investment income, you are living life on your terms. And it doesn’t have to take you another twenty to thirty years to get there. There is a lot of advice out there. Quite frankly, there are a lot of sharks in the social media ocean. I get it if you have reservations about something that comes across as too good to be true. I thought that same thing for a very long time. But I was living my life based on outdated financial strategies that don’t work anymore. My dad didn’t have enough time to reach financial freedom, but maybe you do. If you want to find out, let’s sit down, go over the numbers, and take this savings model on a spaceship ride to the future.
