The Federal Reserve is responsible for the management of prices and unemployment in the United States. It manages these outcomes by utilizing monetary policy - a blend of interest rate hikes/cuts, Open Market Operations (asset purchases/sales), and a few other small tools at their disposal. With inflation still running well above the central bank’s target of 2%, the Federal Reserve will likely engage in its 10th interest rate hike since the start of this cycle in early 2022. The hike would bring the Fed funds rate above 5.00%, its highest levels since before the Great Financial Crisis. Speaking of the Great Financial Crisis, a lot of investors are starting to get VERY nervous about the state of the economy. Energy prices continue to fall due to ongoing demand concerns, while banking stocks are plummeting in the wake of the collapse of First Republic. The same goes with politicians. On Monday, three Senators demanded that the Federal Reserve not raise interest rates - despite the ongoing worries about red-hot inflation. The entire situation has a lot of people worried that Jerome Powell is about to drive the U.S. economy off a cliff at the same time that the debt ceiling problem starts to heat up.
