Last night proved to be a wild ride after the closing bell, as Amazon's stock initially surged by 12% following positive earnings results, only to make a sharp U-turn and end up declining by 4%. This rollercoaster ride undoubtedly caused some nail-biting moments for those who held options leading up to earnings announcements (which, as a general rule, isn't recommended). Meanwhile, lackluster earnings were reported by Snap (SNAP) - no surprises there - and Pinterest (PINS). This morning, we'll be awaiting earnings announcements from ExxonMobil (XOM) and Chevron (CVX), which will provide insights into potential[opportunities in the energy sector](. Additionally, the Personal Consumer Expenditures (PCE) report is set to be released, which is the Federal Reserve's preferred inflation measure. This could reignite inflation concerns, especially as yesterday's GDP report indicated a resurgence of inflation. Next week, the Fed is scheduled to convene and discuss its rate hike plans for May. The focus of these meetings may begin to shift from rate hikes to the possibility of the Fed pivoting on quantitative tightening, as it may need to assume the role of the "buyer of last resort" for U.S. debt. Navigating these complex economic conditions is becoming increasingly challenging for the Central Bank, particularly with the impending debt ceiling debate.
