Today, the market begins with little change as investors eagerly anticipate the Producer Price Index (PPI) scheduled for release at 8:30 am ET. But the real battle between the bulls and bears revolves around the probability of rate hikes and pivot narratives. Currently, there's a 65% likelihood of a 25 basis points increase in May, while the first rate cut is projected for July at a 16% probability. Try to avoid getting whiplash keeping track of these figures day-to-day. Yesterday, the market declined after the Federal Reserve's minutes from their March FOMC meeting revealed the possibility of an economic downturn in the latter half of 2023. The mere presence of the word "recession" in these minutes is noteworthy, as central bank officials are usually cautious about using such terminology. It remains to be seen whether the "buy the dip" crowd is prepared to act this morning or if the notion of a recession will cause a shift in sentiment.
