We’re all tempted by stocks that seem to soar above the market.
“High-beta” stocks tend to climb at a faster rate than the broad market, when the broad market is already climbing.
But there are plenty of “high-beta bombs” to avoid on any given day. Watch out for this dangerous combination before adding a stock to your portfolio in hopes of huge gains:
- A market cap of less than $2 billion (“small”).
- A 3-year beta ranked in the top 30% of all stocks (âhigh-betaâ).
- A 1-year sales growth rate ranked in the top 30% of all stocks (“high-growth”).
- Negative earnings-per-share for each of the last five quarters (“unprofitable”).

And you know a company dominates its industry when its name becomes a verb.
We don’t “search the internet for something.” We “Google it.” Precious few companies can boast that level of dominance.
But does that make Google’s parent company Alphabet Inc. (Nasdaq: GOOGL) a solid company to invest in?
