I can’t express how much the world we live in today feels so far from the world I lived in growing up closeted. I wish I could tell that little boy growing up in the suburbs that he’d later serve as living proof of the ideal that it does, indeed, get better. There’s so much for us to celebrate—and keep fighting for. Because there’s a world out there where no one has to question whether it is safe to show up as they are. A world where a kid like me growing up poor, Black, and gay can have the confidence to achieve anything he or she or they put their mind to. We need leaders in Congress who understand the struggles of the LGBTQ+ community and who will always stand in support of equality for everyone.
