â Hello readers, No new episode this week as our team is taking a well-deserved rest, but we DO have a newsletter takeover! Itâs Shannan here with this edition; I'm honored to recommend some past episodes that inspired my reading life, get some help from y'all, as well as share three things I love, one thing I donât, and what Iâm reading now. In [Episode 83: An epic birthday bookstore roadtrip](=), team member Donna inspired me to make going to a local bookstore in every city I visit a priority. Now, when planning my trips, I look for the best breakfast place and the local indie. Iâm having so much fun with my âheck yeah reading projectâ this year. In fact, [Episode 283: Donât save the good stuff]( with team member Ginger is the inspiration for my upcoming 2023 reading project. In that episode, Anne told Ginger to not save her most-anticipated reads for later. I am guilty of this. Shall I call it my âIâm not saving it reading projectâ? If you could help me come up with a better name I'd appreciate it! And of course, I would be remiss to leave out my own original episode as one of my favorites: [Episode 179: Life is short and my TBR is way too long](. Anne helped me understand my reading life like I never did before. We discuss how I didnât like long books ... but since that episode, I donât think I can say that about myself anymore; see what Iâm reading now and loving. 3 things I love: â
1. My [absolute favorite novella won a Hugo Award](=). Anne talked to Becky Chambers during the celebration of WSRINâs 300th episode. I invite you over to the [MMD Book Club]() where weâre going to learn all about literary awards in October. 2. [Michelle Obama wore braids]() to the unveiling of her and her husbandâs White House portraits. The little Black girl in me squealed with delight. Representation matters, y'all. 3. [One of my all-time favorite novels is being adapted into a movie](=), releasing in October. I loved Kunal Nayyar as Raj in The Big Bang Theory and canât wait to see him portray A. J. Fikry. The trailer looks amazing. 1 things I don't: â
Remember when I said representation matters? If we had seen better representation throughout history, I seriously doubt we would see the pushback at the [casting of Steve Toussaint for the prequel series of Game of Thrones]( AND other actors of color in the following projects: the live action movie of The Little Mermaid, the new prequel series for Lord of the Rings, and the series Obi-Wan Kenobi, released this year. If Black people cannot exist in worlds with dragons, mermaids, elves and hobbits, and the Force, it doesnât bode well for the existence of my son in this (non-fantastical) world.
â What I'm reading now: â
I usually have a nonfiction and fiction going at the same time. In MMD Book Club last month, Peng Shepherd recommended [Babel]() by R. F. Kuang. She was right: itâs amazing. I donât want it to end and so Iâm taking it slow. Iâm also rereading Shauna Niequistâs [I Guess I Haven't Learned That Yet]() because, you guessed it, I havenât learned the lessons yet. Thank you for allowing me to share and as Anne would say: happy reading! Shannan P.S. I canât wait for [WSIRN Patreon](=) Trivia Night taking place Thursday, October 20 at 7 PM ET. Nowâs the time for y'all to brush up on your WSIRN trivia and get ready for some fun! = © Anne Bogel | 291 N Hubbards Ln Ste 172-225, Louisville, Kentucky 40207
