Hey readers, Today’s guest came to me with a specific request for surprising books with unique story structures, new information, and plot twists that will make her say, “WHAT did I just READ?!” Shelly Akins is a proud Arizonian who is always reading. And when she isn’t reading, she loves attending the Tuscon Festival of Books, a huge literary festival where both book talk and fangirling are welcomed. We eagerly await the day we can gather for book festivals again, but in the meantime, Shelly finds community in her Book Challenge Group, which is not a traditional book club. Talking books with fellow readers has helped Shelly hone in on her personal reading taste and decide what she wants more of in her reading life. Listen now wherever you get your podcasts and be sure to visit the podcast website at [whatshouldireadnextpodcast.com/252]( for the full list of titles we discussed. 3 things I love: - If you love plot twists as much as Shelly does, check out [this spoiler-free list of books with the best twists and turns](=). - [Barack Obama's memoir coming out in November is BIG book news](), but here's the part that really blows my mind: "To accommodate such an enormous order, Crown plans to print about 1 million of those books in Germany and has arranged for three ships, outfitted with 112 shipping containers, to bring those copies to the United States." - Take this with a grain of salt, but [read on to find out if your reading type based on your enneagram type](=) rings true to you. I have to say my own type 9 description strikes me as WRONG ALL WRONG. (If you're thinking, "What's an Enneagram?" I wrote all about personality typing, including an Enneagram chapter, in my book [Reading People](—which came out three years ago this month.) 1 thing I don't [Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg died at 87](); she accomplished so much, and this is such a loss. She once said: "Reading is the key that opens doors to many good things in life. Reading shaped my dreams, and more reading helped me make my dreams come true." What I'm reading now I have been on a serious roll lately with my reading life: I have two hours left on [this audiobook mystery](, and then I'm rereading [this fabulous YA novel in verse]( in preparation to talk to the author in the MMD Book Club next week. Nonfiction-wise, I'm thrilled to be reading two long-anticipated (by me, and maybe by you) books by friends of mine for endorsement: [The Power of Writing It Down](=) by Ally Fallon and [Share Your Stuff, I'll Go First]( by Laura Tremaine. Happy reading! Anne P.S. Our next Book School session is a one-hour deep dive into genre and form. It's happening this Wednesday, and it's not to late to join us. [Click here for more info](=), or [click here to check out our whole syllabus]().
