Quilting is a powerful tool for breaking down barriers and bringing people closer, and this week’s Stitched Together story is proof of that. Thank you to Linda for sharing this sweet story. “For many years I worked at an elementary school as an educational assistant in a special education learning disabled room. Part of my job was to read to the kids from a book each morning before reading class. We read a story about a young boy who lived with his grandmother in the summer and sat under the quilts while the ladies quilted. Since the children knew I quilted they all wanted to make a quilt. The teacher said she would allow us take two weeks for quilting. The children brought in their clothes from home and we decided to make each a pillow. “One boy had just lost his mother so he brought in her clothes. He asked if I would help him make a pillow for his brother and we did. One day as we sat sewing, the young man began to talk of the night of his mother’s tragic death. It was such a sad tale and before long we were all crying with him. Most of the kids got up and gave him hugs and he sobbed in my arms. It was an experience none of us had ever had and probably will never have again. “They loved working on their pillows and sewing the pieces together. Really I was most proud of them all. I put the children’s names on the pillows before they sewed the backs on them. Every child went home with their own unique pillow stitched by them and with such pride! It has been years now; they have grown up and I retired but I see them now and then. The first thing they say is ‘I still have my pillow and remember the time quilting and talking!’ I do too! It makes quilting so much more fun when I think of them!” The only thing I love more than quilting fabric is quilting stories. Got a good one? Send me yours at stories@missouriquiltco.com.
