Quilters agree, our hobby is much more enjoyable when you have the support of your spouse. With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, I thought it was appropriate to share today’s Stitched Together story about one quilter who knows how lucky she is in love. “When I first started to quilt I was newly married and my husband and I were on a pretty tight budget. We enjoyed going to auctions to look for deals, and I started to notice that occasionally quilts were up for bid. I wanted desperately to own some of these treasures, but it seemed that every time I bid, I was up against people with more money to spend than I, and many times I could tell they were antique dealers. I was definitely in over my head. “One day we stopped at an outdoor estate auction and, as usual, quilts were being snapped up at prices that I could not afford. The quilts went early in the bidding process, then the antiques disappeared and so did the dealers. We hung around just for fun and all of a sudden I saw something across the lawn that just didn't look right. It was a bedroom set and on the bed was what looked like a mattress pad, but there was a tiny blue trim going all the way around it. Could it possibly be an antique quilt upside down on the mattress? I casually wandered over to the bed and carefully peeked under the "mattress pad" so that no one else would notice. I was thrilled to discover that it was indeed an upside down, antique quilt and it was even a pattern that had a lot of meaning to me. My new husband had a very Irish name and heritage and this was a beautiful, hand pieced, intricately hand-quilted Irish Chain quilt! “I went to one of the auctioneers and asked if this surprise quilt could be auctioned off separately from the bedroom set. I was told it had to go with the set. I was devastated when I had to report the news to my husband, but to my disbelief, my husband said "If you really want the quilt, we can buy the bedroom set and then sell it afterwards so you can have your quilt." My heart melted and I knew right then that I certainly had made the right choice in finding a husband! “As I was preparing to bid on a bedroom set that I didn't want, need, or even really afford, one of the other auctioneers decided to sell the quilt separately. By this time there were very few bidders left, so I bid against only one other person and won the Irish Chain quilt for just $25! “Today, not only do I still have that beautiful antique quilt (now worth about $600), I have a fairly extensive collection of antique quilts as well. But more importantly, I really did pick the right man for my husband. We'll be celebrating our 41st wedding anniversary this coming May!” The only thing I love more than quilting fabric is quilting stories. Got a good one? Send me yours at stories@missouriquiltco.com.
