BEHIND THE NEWSLETTER: HI, IâM LOLA. Hi! Iâm Lola Allgyer, the writer of this newsletter. Iâm a copywriter by trade, and I love the creative element that comes along with writing for a living. Outside my work, Iâm also a photographer, an amateur musician, and a digital nomad. Iâm passionate about art and creativity, and I love exploring the world of design through the lens of this newsletter. ADIDAS USES UNIQUE DESIGN TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE While design is a way to spread beauty, inspire creativity, and advertise companies, it can also be a way to change the world. Adidas just demonstrated that in their latest partnership with Parley for the Oceans. They designed a floating tennis court out of recycled plastic, to bring awareness to the plastic problem in our oceans. Then they set that court afloat in the Great Barrier Reef. Across the side of the floating court shone the words: âPLASTIC WASTE IS A PROBLEM. INNOVATION IS OUR SOLUTION.â Donât worry, Adidas made sure any tennis balls that fell into the ocean were retrieved. [Read the full story here.]( WHY IS THE NEW GREEN M&M SO CONTROVERSIAL? Did Mars Wrigley just make a huge mistake by de-sexualizing the Green M&M? While the new designs for M&Ms may seem like a step toward progress, are they a bigger issue than some may think? The new green M&M specifically seems to have created quite a ruckus on the internet. Some say that removing the high heels and long lashes borders on âslut-shamingâ. Others cheer at the progress, since the new design is less traditionally feminine and far more inclusive. It just goes to show that, no matter how good a designerâs intentions are, there are still people out there who will take your work the wrong way. My interest in graphic design started in my college years. I studied advertising, and design was as exciting for me as the strategic part of the process. I was also interested in 3D modeling and some coding during those years. After graduation, I started to work as a lecturer in the Faculty of Communications at Anadolu University, teaching advertising design, graphic design and web design. I wrote Photoshop tutorials for Envato's TutsPlus for several years and I met with stock sites like GraphicRiver, Creative Market, etc. ð¨ How would you describe your design process?
In general terms, it's fun!
It starts with coming up with an idea, of course. Since I've worked as a designer, I'm familiar with the needs of designers. I usually like to develop add-ons and extensions, considering my own needs as a designer. For extensions, I start with simple versions of the project I have in mind and develop it, step by step. I design the user interface and finalize the product. Endless testing is another part of the process, especially when working on image effects like watercolor, oil paint or any other image effect. ð What is a fun fact about yourself?
Well, I'm a big Depeche Mode fan, I love synthesizers, I love vintage toy cars. I have a nine-year-old son. ð§ What is most challenging about your line of work?
Sometimes, it's coming up with a good idea to work on. Sometimes, when I work on an extension, coding can be the most challenging part. But if I'm working on an image effect, the most challenging thing is to make it work with a wide range of various photographs. â° What can we expect from you next?
I love typography, so I guess a typography-related extension will be what I'm working on next. â Coffee or tea (or what is your go-to drink)?
I'm definitely a tea person. Top deals from Eren (Design Rocket) on Mighty Deals
