[View in browser]( [Mail & Guardian]( M&G Mornings | Wed 25 Oct   South Africans get by on humour, it’s one of our biggest tools for surviving life. Even when faced with the prospect of another nerve-racking rugby match. Two single-point victories — in the quarter-finals against France and the semi-finals against England — and our collective nerves are shot. First, we took the mickey out of France after narrowly defeating them — [amagwinya over croissants]( all day. Then we took on the English, after being outplayed for 70 minutes before snatching it in the final 10 thanks to a blinder of a kick from Handre Pollard and the unbelievable force of Ox Nche. The banter came when Irish rugby pundit [Matt Williams questioned]( the Boks’ use of the scrum — to get a penalty — was killing the game. Memes were all over social media pitting Nelson Mandela against Queen Elizabeth. The score was 2-0 to Madiba after the Proteas gave England a royal walloping in the cricket. But all jokes aside, the allegations of a racial slur by Bongi Mbonambi is a stain on this past week and the win. Aside from the ethics of it, a ban for Mbonambi means we’re without a first-choice hooker. That can’t be good going into a game with an All Black side on the rampage. Our recent form against them has been up and down but if there’s one thing we know about this Bok side, they can handle the pressure. Once again the ever impressive bench will play a key role. So we’ll braai up, stack up on the biltong, drink up, don our green and gold on Saturday and get ready to watch the Boks.
