[View in browser]( [Mail & Guardian]( M&G Mornings | Tue 24 Oct   [Ron Derby] Given the urgency of trying to find a long-term solution for some of the country’s many socio-economic crises, I’ve been asking myself one central question about next year’s elections: will coalitions be better at making decisions than the ANC? According to a poll by the Brenthurst Foundation and the Sabi Strategy Group, the ANC is set to lose its majority in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, which would be a nightmare for the party, if it was sober. If these polls are correct, then we are about to get an answer to my question. If a desperate ANC gets into a coalition with the Democratic Alliance-led Moonshot Pact, I’m just imagining how long it will take John Steenhuisen, Herman Mashaba, Velenkosini Hlabisa, Pieter Groenewald, Neil De Beer and Mmusi Maimane to reach consensus before reaching it with the ANC on an issue such as immigration. That’s a bad example because, sadly, most of our parties are following a very populist “nationalist” stance on the matter. An ANC and Economic Freedom Fighters coalition comes with its own complications, a battle between those wounded by the ruling party and exiled and those who have managed to remain power brokers within. It’s the 2024 question.
