[View in browser]( [Mail & Guardian]( M&G Mornings | Fri 13 Oct   Minister of Public Enterprises Pravin Gordhan has been thought to be untouchable in President Cyril Ramaphosa’s cabinet. Despite having little political pull within the ANC as he isn’t in the national executive committee, Gordhan still wields considerable influence. ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula (a loose cannon if there ever was one) made the mistake of underestimating Gordhan, a lesson he soon learned when he was forced to issue a public apology hours after thumping his chest threatening to remove Gordhan should he fail in his duties. It might be clear to the ANC’s high-ranking leaders that Gordhan’s time has come to an end, but Ramaphosa still insists there is some use for him. With the party’s national executive committee expected to debate the state of SOEs, it’s almost certain that Gordhan’s detractors will try to persuade Ramaphosa to rid himself of his most trusted and yet unpopular ally. There will be huffing and puffing but I have little faith it will amount to any action. Keep reading the Mail & Guardian’s coverage around developments around the “meddlesome” minister as a former Eskom chairperson calls him. However well intentioned, his desperate drive to rescue the SOEs is finding little favour, especially within the party.
