M&G Mornings | Wed 06 Sep ? from Nairobi. Creecy multilateral development banks and international

[View in browser]( [Mail & Guardian]( M&G Mornings | Wed 06 Sep   [ozayr_patel_hello-1] The Africa Climate Summit is underway in Nairobi. The hope is that it will yield a unified African voice ahead of the United Nations climate conference, COP28, in the United Arab Emirates later this year. From the two days of the summit, it is already clear that climate finance is a major talking point. Leaders such as Kenya’s President William Ruto and South Africa’s minister of forestry, fisheries and the environment, Barbara Creecy, have emphasised that climate finance is crucial albeit with slightly different messages. Ruto said Africa need not be a beggar looking for handouts but should rather make use of the continent’s vast renewable resources it has and strike deals and partnerships with other nations, as Mandisa Nyathi [reports]( from Nairobi. Creecy [said]( multilateral development banks and international finance institutions must come up with novel finance mechanisms that make sense for Africa. Mohamed Adow, the director at Power Shift Africa, has taken a harder stance. He said Africa is receiving much less than it is due from developed nations and Africa’s countries must unite and demand what they are owed. “Africa needs to demand climate reparations. The historic polluter must be held accountable, climate action must be delivered on the basis of equity”, [he told]( Lesego Chepape. We’ll keep you updated on what’s happening at the summit.
