With Lady R probe resolved, now it’s about Agoa

[View in browser]( [Mail & Guardian]( M&G Mornings | Tue 05 Sep   [Ron Derby] With South Africa’s probe into what happened in Simon’s Town with the Lady R now seemingly resolved and the US happy that the country hasn’t armed Russia in its conflict with Ukraine, the focus now moves to South Africa’s continued membership of Agoa. In November, the country will host a summit on the 23-year old American trade deal with 36 African countries. Had the Lady R inquiry raised concerns about the country’s non-aligned status, it’s questionable whether we would have hosted the summit at all, let alone remain in the trade deal that expires in 2025. Over the next couple of months, the summit will come into greater focus as South Africa has tactfully negotiated its position in a world that’s becoming increasingly pitched as a battle for influence between China-led East and the US-led West.
