M&G Mornings | Thu 24 Aug ? The electricity minister suggested he had cast a wide net to find part

[View in browser]( [Mail & Guardian]( M&G Mornings | Thu 24 Aug   [Ron Derby] Whether by providence or through a well-orchestrated plan from Delhi, the “new India” under Prime Minister Narendra Modi has successfully landed in the southern polar region of the moon. It is the fourth country to land on the moon and it came in the same week that the ageing Russian giant fighting a bitter war saw its moon-bound mission crash and burn. A literal changing of the guard, perhaps. “We are witnessing the rise of a new India,” Modi said in response to the moon landing. It’s a busy week for Modi, who is attending the Brics summit, where his country’s presence has stood out as the loudest, with billboards across Johannesburg welcoming him to the country. The mission in South Africa has clearly been to show that India certainly isn’t the junior partner in this alliance, and deserves to be seen much in the same vein as China, which is Africa and Latin America’s biggest trading partner. The moon landing, the Brics presence and the hosting of the G20 in about three weeks from now have come at a time when India wants to reflect its status as a world power that will no longer sit in the shadow of its still economically larger neighbour.
