[View in browser]( [Mail & Guardian]( M&G Mornings | Thu 10 Aug   [Ron Derby] When Jacob Zuma decided to run for both the ANC and the country’s presidency after his axing as deputy president by Thabo Mbeki in 2005, one of his objectives may have been to evade prosecution. When Schabir Shaik, one of Zuma’s many friends, was convicted earlier that year for having a corrupt relationship with him, it was only a matter of time. Eighteen years have now passed and he still faces the threat of prosecution for the arms deal — and, this week, the very real prospect of returning to jail for defying a constitutional court order linked to the Zondo state capture commission. Despite a bad presidential term dedicated to hollowing out the state, with special focus on the justice and security cluster, Zuma still faces his biggest nightmare of prosecution at the ripe old age of 81. Was it all worth it? Former US president Donald Trump looks to be pursuing a similar objective as he aims for a return to the White House. If he is paying any attention to the travails of our former president, maybe a rethink is warranted.
