[View in browser]( [Mail & Guardian]( M&G Mornings | Fri 04 Aug   [Ron Derby] For years, we’ve watched the rise and rise of Julius Malema. Wondering if one day the man from Seshego would walk onto the terraces at Union Buildings as our future president as ordained by Jacob Zuma, himself. From winning the presidency of the Congress of South African Students (COSAS) in 2001, to a chaotic emergence as the ANC Youth League presidency in Bloemfontein seven years later and to his eventual ousting from much beloved ANC, his political career is a ride that we’ve been unable not to watch. Over the past weekend, we watched yet again (some peeking through their fingers) as he stood on a hydraulically raised podium in the middle of the FNB Stadium and what must rank as the height of his political career to date. It seemed to me both a celebration of his 10 years at the helm of his party and the entry into Union Buildings next year through a possible coalition with the ANC. Should this not come to pass, then the Malema career that we’ve watched over the past 20 years looks set for its most difficult path yet. If internal democracy is a feature of EFF life, then he will face his first real challenge as party leader – if not by his erstwhile deputy, then surely another. In this week’s Mail & Guardian story we speak to party insiders that want a Floyd Shivambu led future. There’s a lot riding on 2024 for Malema.
