[View in browser]( [Mail & Guardian]( M&G Mornings | Wed 02 Aug   [ozayr_patel_hello-1] So far this year, 231 rhinos have been killed for their horns in South Africa, a decline of 28 animals (11%), compared with last year’s statistics. This left Forestry, Fisheries and Environment Minister Barbara Creecy feeling optimistic as it suggested that new initiatives, such as collaboration between law enforcement authorities, were working, Sheree Bega reports. Figures show that poaching has continued its trend of moving away from Kruger National Park to provincial and private reserves in KwaZulu-Natal. The other measures being taken to combat poaching include dehorning, erecting and repairing a fence around the Hluhluwe/iMfolozi Park in KwaZulu-Natal and providing a designated prosecutor to facilitate rhino cases in that province. Creecy noted that another problem was rangers working with criminal syndicates. She noted that steps are being taken to deal with this, such as improving their health and well-being, providing training and offering financial services including debt management. But, as long as there is a demand for rhino horn, the species will always be in danger. Sign up to the Green Guardian, our [environmental newsletter](.
