M&G Mornings | Tue 18 Jul ? A world where where individual well-being is measured by collective pr

[View in browser]( [Mail & Guardian]( M&G Mornings | Tue 18 Jul   [ozayr_patel_hello-1] Nelson Mandela would have been 105 years old today. This year also marks a decade since his death. The first post-apartheid president remains a polarising figure. On the one hand, he is revered, an icon. A man who took South Africa away from civil war. He is seen to have changed the continent, the world and inspired millions through his actions, beliefs and words. On the other hand, he is called a sellout, the man who sold out the black man to appease the interests of a white minority. Say what you want about him, but people like him are rare. He changed the world no matter what your views on him are. To commemorate his birthday this year, his foundation has themed the day as “Climate, Food and Solidarity” and its call to action is “It is in your hands”. The foundation is planting a million trees, 60% of which are fruit trees, at home-based and community food gardens around the country to help alleviate food insecurity, inequality and poverty — all of which are further fuelled by climate change. If Madiba stood for anything it was unity and working together. Mandela said during his inauguration as president of South Africa at the Union Buildings on 10 May 1994: “We know it well that none of us acting alone can achieve success. We must therefore act together as a united people, for national reconciliation, for nation building, for the birth of a new world.” Those words ring true. Alone, the crises of climate change — environmental degradation, natural disasters, weather extremes, as well as food and water insecurity — cannot be overcome. With unity, different players acting together can achieve so much. This needs to happen now. Time is running out.
