[View in browser]( [Mail & Guardian]( M&G Mornings | Thu 02 Mar [Ozayr Patel] As much as you may be tired of reading or hearing about Eskom, we simply cannot ignore the power utility. Thereâs just so much happening around it and the power cuts affect all South Africans. The power utility is 100 years old and is probably in the worst shape it has ever been in. Regularly needing bailouts, unable to cope with the demand for electricity and ailing power stations, Eskom has now been rocked by allegations of corruption by former chief executive Andre de Ruyter. And the state-owned enterprise often implements higher load-shedding schedules but doesnât announce this. A report by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research found that Eskom has under-reported on how bad the situation is. Some areas experience close to 12 hours of power cuts a day. An Eskom insider has said that last week 8 000 megawatts were shed yet stage six was announced. The latest out of Eskom is that the National Energy Regulator of South Africa is working with the power utility about possibly increasing the stages of lead-shedding. The goal behind this is to ensure that a blackout does not happen. In court papers, De Ruyter said that a grid collapse or blackout would be catastrophic.
