[View in browser]( [Mail & Guardian]( M&G Mornings | Fri 27 Jan   Over the past few weeks and months, we at the Mail & Guardian have been toying with some taglines that would best represent our purpose. Founded close to 38 years ago, this news organisation was geared towards opposing the criminal apartheid state. In the years that have followed its demise, we have largely told the story of the most under-privileged, highlighting disparities they face in society. We’ve also celebrated women and youth and will continue to do so, as well as keeping the arts and culture flag flying high in the Friday section. Having said that, there’s still a flag that we must pitch for what our values are and where we stand on the struggles of the youth in South Africa and the continent. Africa has the world’s youngest population, something that could be a boon if their issues are prioritised. That means highlighting the story of 25-year-old Kenyangay rights campaigner Edwin Chiloba, who was murdered in Nairobi last week. It’s a story we covered through The Continent. It’s a terrifying and depressing tale, shedding light on East Africa and the continent’s struggle with bigotry and homophobia. Human rights groups have linked the killing to his sexuality. It’s a sobering read. What happened in Kenya earlier this month, takes place in South Africa as well, with some 16 such deaths reported in 2021. The attacks are mostly targeted on black lesbians and those who identify as transsexual. Chiloba’s story is a shared one about our bigotry that the youth are only going to further expose in years to come.
