[View in browser]( [Mail & Guardian]( M&G Mornings | Fri 18 Nov Years ago, I once equated being a South African citizen as playing a leading role in one of the many neurotic, anxiety ridden Woody Allen movies. For longer than we care to remember, weâve sat on the edge of our seats wondering just where this country is going economically, especially under the governance of the ANC. The height of our shared apprehension comes every five years as the party chooses its next president. So here we are just about a month away from when one of the oldest political parties in the developing world chooses its next leader, with no certainty as to whether the incumbent will survive. There are many permutations with men such as Paul Mashatile preparing to seize their opportunity â â if not in the immediate aftermath of the elective conference â â then in the weeks and months that follow. Over the coming month, the Mail & Guardian is going to be covering all the developments in this leadership race. The next big chapter in this Woody Allen script is the Phala Phala scandal, a hurdle that President Cyril Ramaphosa has to overcome if he is to remain its leader. Itâs going to be a wild ride, which the M&G’s political team will be giving you the best coverage.
