To jog your memory, it was to lower global warming to below 2°C, preferably 1.5°C, compared to pre-industrial levels. Well, the latest United Nations Environment Programme report suggests that weâre quite far from reaching that goal. The report found that the world is headed for 2.8°C of warming by the end of this century. Added to that, The World Bank estimates that by 2030, 118 million people on the continent will be exposed to drought, floods and extreme heat if action is not taken now. African countries who are marginal emitters, must use the opportunity COP27 brings to put forward itâs climate needs. Itâs almost time for COP27, called the African COP. Taking place in Egypt this year, key issues at this yearâs conference must address the myriad climate challenges facing the African continent. The continent stands to be hit the hardest by the impacts of climate change, so what must be done about it? African countries will be calling on developed nations to honour their financial commitments. Without financial and technical support, the continent will not be able to mitigate the harsh impacts of climate change.
