Terence Blanchardâs Champion OPENS APRIL 10 Following last seasonâs groundbreaking, Grammy Awardâwinning production of Fire Shut Up in My Bones, composer Terence Blanchard returns to the Met for the company premiere of Champion. Bass-baritone Ryan Speedo Green stars as the closeted young hatmaker-turned-prizefighter, who rises from obscurity to become world champion and, in one of the great tragedies in sports history, kills his archrival in the ring. Met Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts a stellar cast that also features bass-baritone Eric Owens, soprano Latonia Moore, and mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blythe. James Robinson, who wowed audiences with his productions of Fire and the Gershwinsâ Porgy and Bess, directs the dynamic new staging, which also showcases choreography by Camille A. Brown.
