[2023 Spring Garden Planning Calendar Kit] Hello gardening friends! I know what you’re thinking, because I once thought the same thing. Fall gardening? Fall is the time when we harvest everything. In September, there’s usually still plenty in the garden, but that winds down over the weeks and by the end of October we’re pretty much at the point of harvesting pumpkins, winter squash, potatoes, and some fruits like apples. So what’s there to do in fall that has anything to do with gardening? Quite a bit, as it turns out. There are plenty of quick-growing crops like radishes that you can plant in September and even October. Then there are those leafy vegetables that love the cool weather, like kale and spinach. And with cold frames, you can extend your season even further. That’s not all, though. Gardening is a continual shift between the present and the future. And while some fall gardening, like planting kale, is more present-minded, there are quite a bit of future-minded activities, too. Fall is the time to plant garlic, amend your soil for the spring, prune fruit trees, and divide perennials. One thing I’ll say about fall gardening is that, believe it or not, it takes more organization than summer gardening. In summer, everything is out and abundant. You don’t have to wonder where your cucumbers are planted or worry about getting something done before the ground freezes. It’s different in the fall. We know our warm days are limited and some of the vegetables we plant won’t come up for another four or five months. That’s why I love having a seasonal calendar to help me keep track of everything. At least where I am, if I wait too long to clean out the garden and prep the soil for spring, the ground freezes and I can’t do anything. Likewise, if I miss my window for planting garlic, I have to resort to buying garlic the following spring and summer. Have you seen the price of garlic lately? Ouch! I also find it helpful to have reminders about things like cleaning and sharpening my garden tools. And I know those of us in colder climates might laugh, but gardeners in warmer planting zones can actually start some of their seeds in late fall and early winter! I don’t know about you, but I can always use a reminder about starting seeds. These are just some of the reasons we put together this 2023 Food Gardening Network Fall Gardening Calendar! When I first started gardening, I made a lot of mistakes, and it didn’t come to me naturally. I had to go through dozens of books, piles of magazines, and about a million websites to figure out how to grow what I wanted. There was some luck, too. I have some friends who are experienced food gardeners, and I wasn’t shy about talking to the farmers I bought produce from at the markets and farm stands. That’s certainly one way to learn. I also realize that takes a lot of time and patience (and no small amount of Type A personality traits!). And honestly, there are times it would have been nice to have one source to discover a new vegetable (or rediscover some old favorites), and get all the information I needed to grow these vegetables in my garden. Well, now there is, thanks to the Food Gardening Network—a one-stop guide for all your gardening and cooking needs. From starting seeds to irrigation to pest control to indoor herb gardens, this is the information I wish I had when I was learning to garden. This is where the Food Gardening Network truly shines.
