Whether it’s legend, literature, lore, or culinary love, the apple is part of our human experience. [Food Gardening Network Preview]( September 6, 2023  [The Audacious Apples Gardening Guide]( Whether it’s legend, literature, lore, or culinary love, the apple is part of our human experience. [Apples] Gain full access to this premium Gardening Guide—and an entire Library of food gardening advice—with a [Charter Gold Membership in Food Gardening Network!]( Dear Garden Grower, The apple holds a storied place in our culture. Whether it’s the story of an apple falling on Isaac Newton’s head, the legend of Johnny Appleseed, or colloquialisms like “an apple a day keeps the doctor away,” apples are inseparable from the human experience. That’s little surprise, of course, given how versatile they are. You can use apples as a primary ingredient in anything from hard cider to applesauce to the famed Waldorf Salad. And we can’t forget the festival favorite Caramel Apple, not to mention Apple pies. You can bake them, enjoy them straight from the tree, or make Apple Chips. Plus, there are some 7,500 varieties of apples throughout the world. That’s a whole lotta apples! [Apples] Despite this, you might find it interesting that apple trees don’t grow very well from seeds. Or rather, they do, but the outcome might not be what you’re hoping for. Apple seeds don’t grow true to type, so that delicious Macoun apple you harvested seeds from might give you something entirely different. Of course, it will be about 10 years before the tree produces fruit and you can find out. But there’s a much more reliable way to get the apples you want. So if you love Enterprise apples with their delightful balance of spiciness and tartness, or the Whitney Crabapple, which is an excellent choice for cider, you can skip the seeds and try grafting. Plus you’ll be able to harvest them in about two years! There’s a featured article, Growing Apples from Seeds, Grafting, or Saplings, in the Audacious Apples Gardening Guide, that has more insight on this. And if you’re thinking you’d love to grow an apple tree, but you just don’t have the space, you might be surprised to find out that you can, in fact, grow apple trees in containers. Be sure to read Growing Apples Trees in Containers for the details. [Food Gardening Network Charter Gold Membership Special Offer—Just $10 for an Entire Year! UPGRADE YOUR MEMBERSHIP TODAY! You have a perfect mix of salty sweet caramel and crisp, tart apple. This treat is a staple at county fairs for a reason! There’s nothing fancy about them, although you can add chopped nuts or chocolate chips if you want. But make no mistake, they don’t need to be extravagant to be amazingly delicious. It doesn’t hurt that they’re easy to make at home, too. Of course, if you love apples but don’t always want something sweet, Baked Apple Chips are the perfect healthy snack! Add a dash of cinnamon and sugar to your apple rings and bake them slow and low (180 degrees for two hours). I have to warn you, though, it’s nearly impossible to stop eating these delectable bites! The complete recipes for both of these, along with four more delightful apple recipes, are in the Audacious Apples Gardening Guide, which is yours with your membership in The Food Gardening Network. Be sure to check out the homemade Apple Cider recipe! Yes, Apples Are Good For You You already know apples are good for you. That’s no surprise. But what does that actually mean? Home Remedies and Health Benefits of Apples has a more comprehensive list, but here are some of the highlights. - Some of the compounds in apples feed the good gut bacteria and support digestion. - Apples are packed with vitamin C, which supports your immune system. - An apple or more a day appears to lower the risk of colorectal cancer. - Researchers have found that people who eat an apple a day have a significantly lower risk of type 2 diabetes than those who don’t. I guess an apple a day really does keep the doctor away! There are more health benefits of apples, but you get the idea. If you want to stay healthy, eat apples.
