Discover the joys of one of the most fun fruits around! And, don't miss these pumpkin recipes. [Food Gardening Network Preview]( July 10, 2023  [How to Start Your Own Pumpkin Patch]( It's pumpkinpalooza time. Ready to grow one of the most fun fruits around? Gain full access to this premium Gardening Guideâand an entire Library of food gardening adviceâwith a [Charter Gold Membership in Food Gardening Network!]( Dear Gardener, You can use them for decorations. Theyâre orange, white, blue, and red. They can be the size of a softball or weigh thousands of pounds. You can roast the seeds. You can use them to make beer, bread, cookies, muffins, soup, pancakes, pies, and more. And not only do they taste great, theyâre packed with nutrition. The pumpkin is simply amazing. Pumpkins are relatively easy to grow, and they can grow on any continent except Antarctica. So thereâs a really good chance that if youâre reading this, you can grow pumpkins. They do need a lot of space, though. Even the miniature varieties can spread 4 to 6 feet. Otherwise, the main requirement is that you plant the seeds after the last frost, since pumpkin seeds donât germinate in cold soil. [Pumpkins] You can learn more about setting up your garden in Preparing Your Home Garden to Welcome Pumpkins. Before you get there, however, be sure to check out the Plant Profiles section in the Pumpkins Gardening Guide. There are several species of pumpkins and dozens of varieties, so youâll need to choose whether you want to grow decorative pumpkins or a variety you can enjoy in the kitchen. Whichever variety you decide on, you can learn all about how to plant, nurture, and enjoy your pumpkins in the Pumpkins Gardening Guide. Palate-Pleasing Pumpkin Recipes One of the nice things about pumpkin recipes is that they can be so versatile. You can make a savory Pumpkin and Bean Soup, with white beans and just a pinch of cinnamon and nutmeg, or you can go sweet with a recipe like Pumpkin Muffins with Cream Cheese Surprise. This oneâs fun because the cream cheese frosting is on the inside. Theyâre easy to make, too. All you need to do is combine your flour, baking powder, spices and salt, then separately mix your milk, pumpkin, brown sugar, melted butter, vanilla, and eggs. Mix that all together, spoon it into your muffin pan and bake for about 25 minutes. For the frosting, beat together the cream cheese, butter, confectionersâ sugar and vanilla. Then use a piping bag to squeeze the frosting into the muffins. The hardest part of this recipe is sharing them. For real. Both of these recipes, along with seven more, are in the Pumpkins Gardening Guide, which is just one of more than two dozen special Gardening Guides that comes when you join The Food Gardening Network. Pollinating Your Pumpkins Of course, before you can get to those delightful pumpkin recipes, you need pumpkins, and to get pumpkins, you need pollination. Pumpkins are self-pollinating: they produce both male and female flowers. Still, youâll need some help from bees or other pollinators. If, however, you arenât sure if the bees are getting to the pumpkin flowers, you can take a DIY approach. First, look for both male and female flowers. The female has a rounded fruit at its base that will eventually become the pumpkin. All you need to do is remove a male flower, then remove the petals. You can then brush the pollen-laden anther on the stigma. Easy as can be. There are more details in the Pumpkins Gardening Guide, along with feature articles to help you take care of your pumpkin plants, how much to water them, what to do about pests, how to harvest pumpkins, and so much more.
