Itâs hard to imagine summer without that rich yellow corn on the cob on our plate, with just a little butter and salt. Or fresh corn, right off the cob in a salad. Or a cookout with an ear of white gold on our plate⦠Ahhh⦠Indigenous people in Central America and Mexico first cultivated corn some 7,000 to 10,000 years ago. Today, corn grows on over 91 million acres of U.S. farmland, with about one-third of that dedicated to corn destined for human consumption. Of course, you donât need us to tell you how decadent the perfect ear of corn can be. Every time you bite into that juicy corn from your favorite farm, you know exactly why itâs so popular. [Corn] The Corn Gardening Guide is a celebration of this jewel of the garden. You can find out everything you need to know to grow the perfect stalks of corn in your garden. Even better, there are seven amazing corn recipes in the Gardening Guide. Just a warning, though. The recipe for tangy Mexican Street Corn may change the way you eat corn forever. Although the Zucchini Corn Fritters are pretty darn phenomenal. Despite the love for corn, there is still a bit of mystery around growing it. This all-in-one guide is here to clear things up. Open up the Corn Gardening Guide and youâll find plenty of featured articles on everything from the different types of corn plants to starting seeds. Planning to Plant Your Corn Corn can be a bit of a curmudgeon regarding where you plant it. If you have a large outside plot with the right soil and right conditions for watering and draining, you might be able to plant it directly in the ground. Otherwise, you may need to consider planting corn in a raised bed. Because corn depends on a lot of plants for pollination and yield, container corn isnât usually an option, though there are one or two hybrid varieties bred specifically for containers. You can read more of the details in Growing Corn in Open Land, in Containers, or in Raised Beds. Our preference is for raised beds, as that makes it a lot easier to control weeds, irrigation, and soil health. However, you donât need a huge raised bed to harvest a good haul of corn. Six feet by four feet is enough to produce about 60 ears. All the particulars are in the Corn Gardening Guide, which is yours right now when you accept your membership in The Food Gardening Network. Seeds or Seedlings? The eternal question for gardeners, no matter the plant, is whether or not to get seedlings or start your own seeds. Weâll tackle that question in Choosing to Grow Corn from Seeds or Seedlings, but hereâs a little of what to expect. Corn is a warm weather crop. It needs warmth to germinate and grow, and a good frost will be the end of your corn. This means your specific climate is especially important to consider when deciding how you want to proceed. If you have a short growing season, your best bet is to start seeds indoors or buy seedlings. BUT⦠corn doesnât transplant well. So what should one do? Donât worry, thereâs a workaround weâll share in the article. The nice thing about seeds, however, is that you get to choose which varieties you want. And there are some quite fascinating varieties out there, both hybrids and heirlooms. The Corn Gardening Guide covers all of the information you need to enjoy a healthy, abundant crop of corn this year. Whether youâre a first-time grower or you just want some more insight into this most wonderful of vegetables, this is your go-to source!
