If you haven’t started your garden yet, now is the time to get moving. Here are 5 plants to get in the ground right away! [Food Gardening Network Preview]( March 30, 2022  [The 5 Best Things to Plant in April]( If you haven’t started your garden yet, now is the time to get moving. Here are 5 plants to get in the ground right away! [April Issue 2022] Gain full access to this premium issue—and an entire Library of food gardening advice—with a [Charter Gold Membership in Food Gardening Network!]( Dear Gardener, April is a busy month in the garden, and we’re here for it! Depending on your location, you may have some seedlings ready to transplant outdoors, your early veggies like peas and radishes may be coming in, or you might even have some squash blooming. April is, in many ways, where the fun of gardening begins. So, what are we planting? How about cauliflower, asparagus, potatoes, apple trees, and blueberry bushes? That’s just a start, of course; there are SOOOOO many things you could plant in April. But we thought it might be fun to explore some of the more unusual April plantings. Plus, these plants don’t care for the summer heat, so you kind of have to plant them in April if you live in a four-season zone. You will need a little patience, though. It could be a year or two before you can harvest asparagus, but it can also continue producing for up to 30 years! Apple trees will take a couple of years to produce fruit, and it may be two years before you can enjoy the fruits of your blueberry bushes. However, you can also plant potatoes twice during the season, so I’d say that makes up for the wait on blueberries and asparagus! You’ll get tons of tips for growing these three exciting plants, from choosing the type you want to grow to prepping your garden and all the way through harvesting and enjoying them in your kitchen. In Dividing Rhubarb: Splitting, Transplanting, and Methods for Moving, we’ll explore the options for dealing with a rhubarb plant that’s growing too large. Rhubarb is generally worry-free, and can live for decades, but it can also get HUGE! And if you already have rhubarb, this is about the right time of year for taking on this task. What’s better to enjoy with rhubarb than strawberries? The question, however, is what type of strawberries to grow. In Everbearing Strawberry Plants vs. June-Bearing Strawberries, we’ll explore the differences between the two types and look at five varieties of each, including a unique white strawberry with an unusually tropical flavor profile. Of course, it wouldn’t be a spring garden without some summer squash. But what should you grow alongside your squash? In 10 Summer Squash Companion Plants You Want in Your Garden, you can find out which flowers and vegetables will help your squash and zucchini be their best and brightest. Whether it’s adding nutrients to the soil, attracting pollinators, or protecting from harmful pests, these squash companions are a must. [Strawberry] Don’t forget, too, that each of these collections comes with recipes so you can take advantage of the amazing flavors of these fruits, berries, herbs, and vegetables. If the idea of Buttermilk Strawberry Shortcake, Garlicky Summer Squash and Fresh Corn, or Rhubarb Comfort Crumble gets your taste buds working like it does mine, you don’t want to miss these collections!
