Everything you need to know to choose, grow, harvest, and enjoy this humble staple of kitchens everywhere. [Food Gardening Network Preview]( November 10, 2021  [The Outstanding Onion Gardening Guide]( Everything you need to know to choose, grow, harvest, and enjoy this humble staple of kitchens everywhere Gain full access to this premium collectionâand an entire Library of food gardening adviceâwith a [Charter Gold Membership in Food Gardening Network!]( Dear Gardener, The humble onion is a favorite in kitchens the world over. Right now there are onions caramelizing in a pan, going into an omelet, or coated and fried as onion rings. Onions can be sweet, pungent, savory, or even a little spicy. Itâs the most widely traded raw vegetable on the planet, the second most consumed vegetable in the world, and the third largest crop grown in the U.S. In fact, some research points to onions as one of the earliest cultivated crops in history. Thatâs not a huge surprise, given how easy they are to grow. And how tasty they are! Need proof? Just check out the seven recipes in the Onion Collection, like Onion-Topped Focaccia Bread or French Onion Soup! By the way, both of these recipes look all fancy-pants, but theyâre super easy. So go ahead and impress your dinner guests. We wonât tell anyone. Letâs back up, though. After all, to get to those Caramelized Onions, we should probably start by deciding what variety of onions to grow. There are hundreds to choose from, and in our Plant Profile section, weâre highlighting 11 of the most popular varieties, along with a breakdown of where they grow best. For example, the Dutch Yellow Shallots are a rich, sweet complement to many dishes, and the plant will grow in hardiness zones 2 to 10. Patterson Onions work best in zones 3 to 5, and are small, but packed with taste. Then thereâs the deliciously sweet Walla Walla Onion, which is great for first time onion growers in zones 3 through 9. Thatâs just a sampling, of course. You can get the full characteristics of these and eight more varieties as part of the Onion Collection. And you can finally get the answer to the question weâve all asked: Why Do Onions Make Us Cry? (Plus, weâll share a few tips to keep the tears away. Thatâs worth the price of admission right there!) Ready to find out? Just click the link below! So Many Onions! Because onions are easy to grow, itâs easy to grow far too many of them. One day youâre caramelizing that first sweet Yellow Granex Onion that came up, and the next youâve got onions as far as the eye can see. So you just pull them up and toss them in a bin in your basement, right? Not quite. Many varieties of onions do quite well in storage, but youâll need to get them ready. Donât worry. Itâs not hard. Gently clean the bulbs and cure them by spreading them out on a clean, dry surface in a well-ventilated space. Give them two or three weeks to dry completely. Once theyâve properly cured, you can store onions in a wire basket or mesh bag for about three months. Then you can enjoy all the onion recipes you want! Itâs all in the Onion Collection, which you can peel open right now when you activate your membership in The Food Gardening Network.
