If not? Well, can I just tell you that carrots are relatively easy to grow and they are worth every ounce of energy you put into them. There’s nothing like a carrot fresh from the soil. Plus, it’s really one of the magical moments in gardening when you pull carrots out of the ground. Tomatoes, eggplants, squash – you can watch all of them grow and ripen and know precisely when to harvest them. But carrots are somewhat of a mystery until you grab a handful of carrot greens and pull them up. Oh! And while the carrots at the market are a nice, uniform orange, heirloom carrots come in a rainbow of colors like white, red, purple, and yellow. In fact, the first domesticated carrots were purple or white, rather than the orange we have at most grocery stores. But that’s going back to the 10th century in Persia. Even before that, though, we can find depictions of both cultivated and wild carrots. The Juliana Anicia Codex of 512 C.E. includes the oldest known reference to cultivated carrots. Even so, it’s the Dutch that get credit for refining the carrot cultivars we have today. Want to know something else cool about carrots? They come in a lot more shapes and sizes than what you’ll find at the grocery store, too. There are five main types of carrots, and they can range from foot-long carrots to little golf-ball-sized globes. Those smaller varieties are perfect for container gardens. And in case you’re wondering, we aren’t forgetting about baby carrots. Did you know you can trace baby carrots back to one specific farm? Just wait until you find out how many pounds of carrots this farm handles each day! Whatever you’re guessing probably isn’t even close. We’ll give you the answer in the Introduction to Carrots, which is in the new Crunchy Carrots Guide. Find out which common flower the carrot is related to, where to go if you want to visit the Carrot Capital of the World, and even where the word “carrot” comes from. It’s all in the Crunchy Carrots Guide, which is ready for you to look through right now! [Food Gardening Network Charter Gold Membership Special Offer—Just $10 for an Entire Year! Where to Grow Carrots Where can you grow carrots if you live outside of the Carrot Capital of the World? Almost anywhere! As long as you can give your carrots six to eight hours of sunlight and the right soil, they’ll grow almost anywhere in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 3 to 10. What, exactly, is the right soil? Carrots enjoy loose, well-drained soil so the roots have plenty of room to stretch out. A sandy loam soil with some aged compost mixed in is ideal. If you have heavy clay soil or especially rocky ground, your carrots might be happier in a raised bed. What many people don’t realize is that you can also plant carrots in containers. The requirements are the same – sunlight and loose, rich soil. Just make sure your container is deep enough. Some gardeners grow carrots in those 5-gallon buckets you can find at most hardware stores. Be sure to read Where to Grow Carrots in the Crunchy Carrots Guide for a more detailed look at growing carrots in containers, raised beds, or open ground. Don’t miss the information about succession planting and timing, either. Plan it right and you could have continuous crops of carrots for weeks on end. What Kind of Carrots Shall We Grow? One of my favorite rewards from gardening is getting to try new varieties of vegetables. Carrots are no exception. Plus, since you can usually get an early and late season carrot harvest, you can try several varieties each season. There are plenty of varieties of carrots to choose from, but you can never go wrong with Purple Dragon Carrots. Not only does it have one of the best vegetable names going, but the royal purple exterior combined with a bright yellow core is a feast for the eyes. Not to be outdone, the Lunar White Carrots have an almost ghostly appearance. This heirloom variety matures in 60-80 days and is absolutely divine in a salad. There’s one other variety of carrot that you absolutely have to know about. It’s so brilliantly colorful and can be almost a foot long at full maturity! Check out the Carrot Plant Profiles to learn more about these and several other unique varieties.
