It’s tasty. It’s a little tart. And if you ask me, it’s one of the most underrated fruits around. If you aren’t familiar with the little citrus gem known as the kumquat, don’t be embarrassed. The fruit is native to Japan and China, and is a traditional gift for the Chinese Lunar New Year. But in the U.S., it’s a relatively niche item, unless you’re in Dade City, Florida for the annual Kumquat Festival. Even then, you’d be hard-pressed to find many details about the popularity of this fruit. There could be a few reasons for that. For one, there is some serious debate as to what kind of fruit it is. It’s regularly classified as a Citrus, but the USDA has declared the kumquat its own genus (Fortunella Swingle) in the family Rutaceae—which also includes our friends the citrus fruits. We’ll leave the debate to smarter people. While they argue, we can enjoy this delicious fruit right off the tree, or in Kumquat Scones, Baked Salmon with Kumquats, or a favorite around here, Kumquats Preserved in Honey (super-duper yummy as an ice cream topping!). The best part about kumquat trees, however, is that they’re easy to grow, and they do really well in containers. If you want to plant them outdoors, you’ll need to be in USDA zone 9 or 10, but for the rest of us, as long as you can give them plenty of sunlight and pull them indoors when it gets chilly, they’ll do just fine in a container. I don’t know about you, but I love the idea of sitting on the couch and reaching over to pull fresh fruit from a tree and pop it right in my mouth. It’s like living in paradise for a brief moment. The most popular variety in the U.S. is the Nagami Kumquat, and it’s easy to see why. The tree is cold-hardy down to 15 degrees Fahrenheit. The oval fruits ripen in late winter and early spring, and have a lovely balance of sweet and sour. As a bonus, it’s largely pest and disease-resistant! If you’d like a variety that’s more of a conversation starter, the Hong Kong Kumquat is a truly interesting tree. It’s the only kumquat that still grows wild in southern China, and it’s probably the most ancient variety of kumquat. You can train the tree as a bonsai, but the fruits themselves are a bit of an acquired taste. They’re a lot smaller than other kumquats and lean heavily into the bitter end of the flavor spectrum. Another interesting variety is the Marumi Kumquat. It’s not very common in the U.S. and the round fruits have a slightly spicy flavor. You can grow this tree outdoors in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 8 to 11, but as long as you prune it, the tree will remain small enough for a container.
