Gain full access to this premium collectionâand an entire Library of food gardening adviceâwith a [Charter Gold Membership in Food Gardening Network!]( Dear Gardener, It’s fair to say we love fruits and vegetables all year long, but there’s nothing that beats biting into a juicy, refreshing watermelon on a sweltering summer afternoon. And in case you’re wondering, supermarket watermelons don’t count. They’re fine in a pinch, but they just can’t come close to the rich, intense flavor of a garden-grown watermelon. Plus, there are more than 1,200 varieties of this iconic summer fruit! The watermelon has been a favorite for thousands of years, even going into the afterlife with Pharaoh Tutankhamun! Itâs a tough, drought-resistant plant thatâs easy to grow, and itâs loaded with vitamin C, beneficial minerals and compounds like beta carotene, and itâs fat-free! And you already know itâs super delish! Oh! And the seeds are free! Yup. You can harvest seeds as you eat a watermelon. There are a few things to point out here regarding open-pollinated and hybrid seeds, and those little white seeds from seedless varieties are sterile, but weâll share all the details in Choosing to Grow Watermelon from Seeds or Seedlings. Ultimately, though, as long as you have some sunshine, a little space, good soil, and youâre in hardiness zones 3-11, you can grow this delightful summer fruit/vegetable! Of course, what should you do with all those watermelons once theyâre ready to harvest? Yes, cut them open and enjoy them, but donât skip using watermelon in recipes like Easy Watermelon Sorbet, Grilled Watermelon Salad, or good ole Watermelon Juice. For real, if you havenât tried watermelon juice, you have got to check out the recipe; itâs super easy and super amazing! Itâs all in the Watermelon Collection, which you can get right now by clicking the link below. Donât miss the Home Remedies and Health Benefits of Watermelon section, either. Thereâs some really cool stuff in there, including three different homemade watermelon face masks and skin treatments! Six Stupendous Selections In the Plant Profiles section of the Watermelon Collection, weâre highlighting six varieties of this flavorful fruit. Why only six, when there are more than 1,200 varieties available? It turns out that many varieties are much better suited to commercial production. That includes seedless varieties, by the way. Those seeds need to stay at a steady 90 degrees Fahrenheit until they germinate. Fear not. Once you try the Sugar Baby, you wonât even care about the other 1,999 varieties. Itâs a small round variety that dates back to 1956, itâs ideal for short growing seasons, and itâs wonderfully sweet. Alright, I was kidding about not caring about the other varieties. The Sugar Baby is a winner, but other varieties are equally as transcendent. The Yellow Doll, for instance, is a gorgeous green melon with dark green stripes and sunny yellow flesh. It works well in small spaces and is also great if you have a shorter growing season. If youâre in a drought-prone area, the Desert King might be a good choice. This open-pollinated melon can weigh more than 20 pounds and it can survive for about a month on the vine after ripening. Itâs all in the Watermelon Collection, which you can look through right now when you activate your membership in [The Food Gardening Network](.
